Explore your Intersections!

We are part of a culture where you see the youth passionate – more than ever before – about finding their passion in life; might take years to find or even fail at it – it is not a scavenger hunt where you just need to find and collect some miscellaneous items!

Yes, it is true, 80% of the people fail at finding their true passion, that one thing which they want to pursue and excel in. Those who know in their hearts what their passion is must pursue it as best results can only be seen there. But, what about the rest!?

Does this world not need them, will they be unsuccessful in their lives if they don’t find that one thing!?

At my age, this term ‘passion’ and the hype associated with it can give you a real hard time, can make you feel like a mediocre and also an underachiever at times.  I have friends who say – you must find your passion in life to succeed whereas I also have friends who say passion is over hyped. Who is right !? I’ve been juggling between the two since the time I graduated and entered the real world.

I agree with the thought that you cannot excel in a particular field, if you are completely disinterested in the same – as you will never be able to give your 100%, however, I don’t completely disagree with the thought that it is over hyped.

In retrospect, when I see myself – at one point in time I was interested in learning to play the violin, I started learning with enthusiasm and excitement – learnt to play few songs  and then after some time I got bored. I used to play badminton in my school days and initial days of my graduation – I played and then I got bored. I used to love swimming in my early teens – even won few competitions and then again, I got bored. I often ask myself, am I a person who doesn’t have any specific interest – will I ever be able to find that one thing that will consume me, passion for that one thing which will sustain throughout my life!? There is NO ANSWER.

“Find what you love and let it kill you” – famous quote by Charles Bukowski. We all wish to follow this in our lives. But, this Ted Talk – ‘Why some of us don’t have one true calling?’ by Emilie Wapnick, kills it totally. Yes, it does!

While still being stuck in this rut of finding my passion, few days back I watched this Ted talk! It has answers to all the queries of all those who fall in my category. And I am sure most of you do!  If you think not being passionate about one single thing is a problem – it is NOT! The case might be – you are interested in multiple things – you try one for some time, get bored, then you try another and then another and the cycle repeats. Do not let that anxiety and the thought – there is something wrong with me, bother you.

You might be a multipotentialite!

As most of the skills are transferable across disciplines – it is never a waste of time to pursue something you are drawn to, even if you end up quitting it.  You might bring your knowledge to an entirely different field.

quote

Understand, your eclectic mix of skills and experiences can give rise to some innovative out of the box ideas, which the current world needs. You have access to a lot of such areas of intersection which you need to explore.

Also, as this talk says, multipotentialites have some tremendous strengths over their specialist peers!

  • Generating Ideas – They can bring the knowledge of various fields, access the various points of intersection and give innovative ideas to this world
  • Rapid Learning – They have the ability to learn things faster. Moreover, as they are used to being beginners many times in the past, they are less afraid of trying new things and stepping out of their comfort zones
  • Adaptability – They easily morph and adapt themselves to a given situation

So, embrace the way you are aligned, be diligent about following your passion and in case, you have many – pursue them and explore your intersections!

  1. So true, “life is not about being perfect, otherwise what would be the difference between humans and machines. It is about making mistakes, falling and following things you are not sure over” because “The journey is more important than the destination…”
It’s really good following one’s passion, even if they keep on changing. Maybe you will find your true passion someday and if you don’t, well that’s something you will never get bored of.

A good read Vibs, enjoyed reading it. It connects to a person at so many levels. Hope to see more good work from you. Till then, keep dabbling with your new passions. 🙂

  2. Amazing! The ‘passion crisis’ that the gen next faces is wonderfully covered in your write up. But the most important thing being, you have gone beyond and have tried to provide a solution rather than just presenting the problem. The optimistic tone that the article ends with, is really impressive.

  3. This article reminded me of my own writing on more or less the same idea that I did some 3 years back in college(https://ahirnish.wordpress.com/2012/09/29/mediocrity-at-its-best/). I would easily call myself a multipotentialite and the fears you mentioned are very much true.

On a different note, this is what Oliver Emberton has to say about passion –

    1. Read your piece Ahirnish 🙂 Very much relatable!

Also, Oliver Emberton has given another beautiful perspective! The point that struck me the most being – “I realized that my passion is for emotional resonance, be it with a friend or spouse or audience or even the culture in general. I like moving into that sweetspot where something in my inner life overlaps with another consciousness, including a kind of group consciousness”. 🙂

  4. Amazingly written! I think I am the one with no passion for a specific one thing but like to envolve to many other things which seems interesting and quit them when they don’t. After reading your blog I now feel that its fine and who knows may be one day you or me will stick to one particular thing while exploring that we cannot leave!

  5. Nicely written once again … Kudos vibhooti … I completely agree and have been assigned to the fact that it’s more about your curiosities than to have a one particular passion in your life.
Curiosities – Seek them, Solve them, Surpass them … A funda I’ve been following for yeas now.

  6. Applaud !! for the well written piece of article on Passion. One thing I am in agreement with is , We ourselves (our mindset) are the reason to make this ‘simple’ life complicated. Using heavy phrases & words….One of such word is Passion Itself. I would like to share my views as well – Passion can be anything, You wrote this blog, took out some time, must have erased and then re-written it many a times, choose to be pointed, choose to be precise, doing such an effort and seeking others to correlate with this and ensuring this actually connects with them……Woooohhha this entire exercise itself can be derived as one of your passion. And, Interestingly whom so ever read it, replied to it are also following their passion of liking such blogs and sharing their thoughts is a Part of their Passion.

Lets understand What is Passion – The simplest of the activity done / repeatedly done for the sake of your own enjoyment/satisfaction is your Passion. OR
The thing/stupid event/activity which sometimes or possibly all the times gives you a King size feel is your passion, You then don’t care about anyone else in your eco system, You just follow it.

    – Keeping the Parker Pen and even writing exams from my favorite parker pen could be one of my passion.

    – Purchasing only 5 shirts in the year even when I couldn’t mint more money from the monthly salary but whenever buying , only choosing Louis Philippe could be one of the passion.

Passion can be wired, can be anything like that……..but is the best for us. Your passion can be a meaningless thing to this pity world/society who can not see the amount of Joy and satisfaction behind it.
In short we all(Yes everyone of Us) , Each living creature / human being is passionate about something or the other, or even if anyone is not, then a set of people, a series of events or even a series of incidents / accidents will help that ONE to get his/her passion.

How…. ? This is what you all wana know..

Lets take couple of examples, Example one – will start with Myself, Cricket was just a game for me until 5 years back. Just a game, what I used to do as a batsman was to Feel Free, Go to the ground , Face the fast bowlers in early Overs and get people & my team entertained with my Batting and yes by default I was the first one who used to feel GREAT after doing that. I used to Try and Hit the Ball Hard, Really Hard…. It was fine, when I joined a local team I kept on doing the same ( Even if I loose my wicket in a hurry ). One fine day ,during some league level match the team noticed and praised, even I would say stunned when I returned to pavilion just after 6 or 7 Overs of the game but the scoreboard said , It was 71 for 1, with my contribution of 46 odd runs in 17 balls. I cherished that moment and came back home after that series. Playing often with the people around and with teams across It actually became my passion….. The Passion of explosive batting.

As I travels a lot in my current profile and I am lucky enough to explore each and every corner of Northern part of the Nation, I really enjoy a lot and my enjoyment gets doubled when Today I crosses any ground and seeing any 2 teams playing cricket , I fails to controls asks my driver to take me close to them , if possible I wouldn’t stop myself by asking to joining them pay them and get a chance to play a ball and HIT THAT BALL HARD……REAL HARD.

Due to shortage of time and limits of words, would like to put a fullstop here and will encourage you all to follow ‘That’ silly thing which you just did or did it 10 years back but enjoyed a lot , find that , do that and make a dent in this world’s peace…..take it in all positive manners and Make Some Noise, because that’s your PASSION……..!

    Get Going, Get Bored with 1st , 2nd , 3rd, 4th …….Nth Passion and find the N+1th Passion and Happy Hunting Within…..!
